I always considered Panasonic an excellent producer of audio equipment. Its quality often exceeded the preferred brand in consumer electronics like camcorders. What qualifies their camera technology to be given this page? How does this product stack up against Canon and Nikon?

I agree with Dave, Panasonic products have always been high quality in my opinion. I have used the DMC-ZS3 camera when a friend bought it and I was pretty impressed by the quality and color definition of the pictures that were taken with this camera. If I had to choose, I may still go with a Canon due to its size but the Lumix would be a close second.
